How to Get a Free Static IP Address with Cloudflare and SyncMyIP

Back to Blog

Having a dynamic IP address can be frustrating when you need consistent remote access to your home network or want to host services like a website or game server. Fortunately, there's a way to get a free static IP address without paying for expensive business internet plans.

Why Do You Need a Static IP?

A static IP address remains constant, unlike dynamic IPs that change periodically. This is essential for:

  • Remote desktop access to your home computer
  • Hosting websites or game servers
  • Running FTP or surveillance camera systems
  • Consistent access to network devices

Solution: Using Cloudflare with SyncMyIP

We'll use Cloudflare's free DNS service combined with SyncMyIP to create a pseudo-static IP solution.

Step 1: Sign Up for Cloudflare

Create a free account at cloudflare.com and add your domain (you can use a free subdomain from services like No-IP or DuckDNS if you don't have one).

Step 2: Configure DNS Records

In your Cloudflare dashboard:

  • Go to the DNS section
  • Create an A record pointing to a placeholder IP (like 1.1.1.1)
  • Ensure proxy status is set to "Proxied" for security

Step 3: Install SyncMyIP

Download SyncMyIP from their official website. This tool automatically updates your DNS records whenever your IP changes.

Step 4: Configure SyncMyIP

1. Enter your Cloudflare email and Global API Key
2. Select your domain
3. Set update interval to 5-15 minutes
4. Enable automatic startup

Step 5: Test Your Setup

Verify that your domain now points to your current IP address. You can test this by:

  • Visiting your domain in a browser
  • Using "ping yourdomain.com" in command prompt
  • Checking Cloudflare's DNS records

Benefits of This Approach

  • Completely free solution
  • Works with any internet connection
  • No need for complex router configurations
  • Additional security through Cloudflare's protection

Troubleshooting Tips

If your IP isn't updating:

  • Check that your API key is correct
  • Ensure SyncMyIP has internet access
  • Verify your domain is properly configured in Cloudflare
