Setting up Plex for remote access can be challenging, especially when dealing with dynamic IP addresses. This guide will walk you through configuring Plex remote access using Cloudflare and SyncMyIP to ensure you can stream your media from anywhere.

Understanding the Challenge

Many home internet connections use dynamic IP addresses that change periodically. This creates problems for remote Plex access since your server's address isn't static. Additionally, most routers require port forwarding configuration to allow external connections.

Prerequisites

  • Plex Media Server installed and running
  • A domain name (you can get a free one from Cloudflare)
  • Cloudflare account
  • SyncMyIP installed on your server

Step 1: Set Up Cloudflare

First, create a Cloudflare account and add your domain. Cloudflare will provide you with nameservers that you'll need to update with your domain registrar.

Configure DNS Settings

  • Log into your Cloudflare dashboard
  • Select your domain
  • Go to the DNS tab
  • Add an A record for your Plex server (e.g., plex.yourdomain.com)
  • Set the proxy status to 'DNS only' for Plex access

Step 2: Install SyncMyIP

SyncMyIP automatically updates your Cloudflare DNS records when your IP address changes.

# Download SyncMyIP
curl -L https://syncmyip.com/install.sh | sudo bash
# Configure with your Cloudflare API credentials
sudo syncmyip --configure

Step 3: Configure Port Forwarding

Access your router's admin panel and set up port forwarding:

  • External port: 32400
  • Internal IP: Your Plex server's local IP
  • Internal port: 32400
  • Protocol: TCP

Step 4: Configure Plex Settings

In your Plex server settings:

  • Enable 'Remote Access' in Network settings
  • Set 'Custom server access URLs' to your domain (e.g., plex.yourdomain.com:32400)
  • Allow relay if direct connections fail

Testing Your Setup

After completing these steps, test your remote access:

  • Try accessing Plex from a mobile device using cellular data
  • Use the Plex Web interface with your custom domain
  • Check the Plex server dashboard for remote access status

With this configuration, you'll have reliable remote access to your Plex server regardless of IP address changes.
